چکیده

The first flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment recorded 16 radio signals that were emitted by cosmic-ray induced air showers. The dominant contribution to the radiation comes from the deflection of positrons and electrons in the geomagnetic field, which is beamed in the direction of motion of the air shower. For 14 of these events, this radiation is reflected from the ice and subsequently detected by the ANITA experiment at a flight altitude of ∼36 km. In this paper, we estimate the energy of the 14 individual events and find that the mean energy of the cosmic-ray sample is 2.9 × 10 18 eV, which is significantly lower than the previous estimate. By simulating the ANITA flight, we calculate its exposure for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We estimate for the first time the cosmic-ray flux derived only from radio observations and find agreement with measurements performed at other ∗ Corresponding author at: Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Saupfercheckweg 1, 69117, Heidelberg. High Energy Astrophysical Tau Neutrinos: The Expectations

A search for high energy astrophysical tau neutrinos will not only yield quite useful information about some of the highest energy phenomenons occurring in the present universe related to the origin of observed high energy gamma rays and ultra high energy cosmic rays but also can possibly probe physics beyond standard model of particle physics. The representative extra terrestrial sources of hi...

Extragalactic UHE proton spectrum and prediction for iron - nuclei flux at 10 8 − 10 9 GeV

We investigate the problem of transition from galactic cosmic rays to extragalactic ultra high energy cosmic rays. Using the model for extragalactic ultra high energy cosmic rays and observed all-particle cosmic ray spectrum, we calculate the galactic spectrum of iron nuclei in the energy range 108 − 109 GeV. The flux and spectrum predicted at lower energies agree well with the KASCADE data. Th...

Some Current Theoretical Issues around Ultra-high Energy Cosmic Rays *

We address some current theoretical issues around ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We recall that scenarios producing more γ−rays than cosmic rays up to high redshift can in general only provide a sub-dominant contribution to the ultra-high energy cosmic ray flux. This includes extra-galactic top-down and the Z-burst scenarios. Finally we discuss the influence of large scale cosmic magnetic field...

Constraints on the Ultra High Energy Photon flux using inclined showers from the Haverah Park array

We describe a method to analyse inclined air showers produced by ultra high energy cosmic rays using an analytical description of the muon densities. We report the results obtained using data from inclined events (60 • < θ < 80 •) recorded by the Haverah Park shower detector for energies above 10 19 eV. Using mass independent knowledge of the UHECR spectrum obtained from vertical air shower mea...

Loop Quantum Gravity Effects on the High Energy Cosmic Ray Spectrum

Recent observations on ultra high energy cosmic rays (those cosmic rays with energies greater than ∼ 4× 10 eV) suggest an abundant flux of incoming particles with energies above 1× 10 eV. These observations violate the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff. To explain this anomaly we argue that quantum-gravitational effects may be playing a decisive role in the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic ...
